Considering a Work Placement Get Crackin!

Considering a Work Placement Get Crackin’! With hundreds of thousands of students graduating this year, the job market is fiercely competitive. Statistics taken from a recent High Fliers Survey showed that there is an average of 52 applications per graduate job. To give yourself a better chance of securing a job, you should try to gain work experience whilst studying â€" securing a work placement is therefore becoming more and more worthwhile. The benefits of doing a work placement are many and increase your employability drastically. Work placements are becoming more and more common, with some courses making them compulsory. On Gradcracker we advertise hundreds of Science, Engineering and Technology work placement opportunities all year round. Most companies tend to divide these between summer and year-long placements but shorter placements are becoming more frequent, especially amongst Technology companies. Get that Placement! Writing a CV and covering letter can be a lengthy and tiresome process but they are crucial to your chances of success. Employers are looking for evidence you fit the role and they look for what they refer to as ‘key competencies’. Common key competencies include: problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, decision-making and communication skills. When writing your CV and covering letter make sure you check what skills the employer is particularly looking for and try and highlight these in your application. Use your covering letter to show that you meet the key requirements and you are familiar with the company and what it does. A lot of students make the mistake of using a scatter-gun approach when applying for placements; try not to do this and, instead, send targeted applications to your chosen employers. Last but not least, check, check and CHECK your application again and then get a second opinion â€" spelling and factual mistakes could put you straight into the ‘no’ pile re gardless of your qualifications and experience. If you are struggling to compile a CV and covering letter, pay a visit to your careers advisor who will be more than happy to help. Social media is part of our day-to-day life and is great for catching up with friends and family. The increase in the usage of social media and online activity means it is easy for employers to do a quick search for you online. This is becoming more and more common and is being used as a ‘screening method’. It can provide a ‘living CV’ for the employer: all your social networking accounts, photographs, blogs and comments you have made might be accessed. Make sure you delete or hide anything that could damage your chances of securing a placement. Similarly, ensure you have a professional sounding email address, such as firstname.lastname@example.com and a suitable voicemail if employers try to contact you! Making the Most of Your Placement! Starting a placement can be a daunting experience with new surroundings and new people. But it is also an opportunity to learn and to make new contacts. Before starting your placement you should think about what you want to achieve from your placement and also think about what your employer expects from you. Make sure you check what time you should start and try to arrive a little earlier starting early/leaving late will only impress. If you are unsure of the dress code, phone beforehand to check as you don’t want to be making a negative first impression on your first day. It may sound obvious but ensure you are polite when talking to colleagues and others. When you begin your placement try not to be nervous. Whilst a new workplace, job and colleagues may seem a little frightening, after even just a day or two things will start to feel familiar. Making notes during briefings shows an eagerness to learn and get things right and if you need clarification, don’t be afraid to ask. During your placement show enthusiasm and initiative, try to do everything to the best of your ability and make a lasting impression â€" a lot of employers view a placement as an extended interview for their graduate programme. At the end of your placement thank people who went out of their way to make your stay such a valuable experience, for example supervisors and colleagues. Try and get a written reference as this will be beneficial when applying for graduate opportunities. Lastly, think about the skills you have learned and what your placement has taught you. For further advice, take a look at the Gradcracker toolkit here.

What are the skills that all employers require

What are the skills that all employers require The importance of employability skills Top 10 skills employers require for graduate recruiters is well documented, notably by ‘High Fliers’ in their annual graduate recruitment survey where it is consistently reported that a majority of the top employers rate these skills at least as highly as academic achievement. Research by Pearson College in 2016 also alludes to the value of employability, with 91% of the (234) employers surveyed reporting that attitude and aptitude were more important in their recruitment decisions than the applicant’s degree subject and university attended. Differentiate yourself I refer to this research not to question the significance of a good degree from a good university but to emphasise that employers look beyond academic achievement. Providing evidence, for example, of your communication skills, teamwork and initiative is how you can make yourself stand out from the competition and demonstrate why the employer should hire you.  Clearly, employers will place emphasis on different skills given the requirements of their particular industry and job roles but is there a specific skill or quality that they all require? The Guardian conducted research with the job search engine Adzuna in 2013, identifying the 10 words and phrases most commonly used by recruiters in their job descriptions and person specifications in over 500,000 job advertisements. (1)   Surprisingly, given that I thought this skill was taken as a given, ‘organised’ was the most popular, cited in over 99,000 adverts. Perhaps the prominence of the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines and work methodically under pressure is symptomatic of the current graduate labour market and level of employer expectation. I spoke to the following employers I have worked with in the science faculty at the University of Warwick this term to ask if the skills often cited in graduate surveys resonated with them: …the key skill we are looking for in new graduates is the ability to translate real world problems into technical solutions. Everyone who works for us needs to continuously learn new skills, so existing knowledge is less interesting than ability to pick up new capabilities. So we’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate they can take what they’ve learnt and apply it in new areas.  (Felix Hoddinott, Executive Director, Quantexa) …the best quality we like to see from all of our talent is being comfortable with criticism and failure, and then showing a willingness to learn from their failings…in the creative industry especially, everyone needs to be open and honest with themselves and their team; sometimes however people come to work with a fear of failure, which they may attempt to hide which is always damaging to themselves and their team. (Adam Wells, Studio Director, Exient Games) …what were looking for is to see how candidates think. What approach they take to work through a problem, and how they are able to take experience they already have and apply it to a new problem… Im looking for people that can do sideways thinking, coming at a problem in a new way to find the best solution to it. (Recruitment Team, Her Majestys Government Communications Centre) …some things are a given; good grades, good communication skills (this can still be shown in a CV by being articulate and nice to read), interest in the field of scientific discovery and attention to detail. To separate, I look for if students who have had paid job, any will do. It shows a lot about your work ethic and that’s something I can’t teach. On the interview day it’s all about communication and attention to detail…above all, proven work ethic is key (Claire Brittain, Senior Research Scientist, European Statistics, Eli Lilly and Company) … it’s your personality, your confidence…your willingness to learn and a passion and commitment for the area of work…these are the soft skills that really help on a day to day basis in the workplace. (Andrew Oliver, CEO, Radiant Worlds) Enthusiasm! Do they demonstrate that they really want the job? Conscientiousness, do they demonstrate attention to detail? Are they hard-working? (Alex Burlton, TPP) Develop your softer skills Whilst not a comprehensive survey this anecdotal employer feedback does highlight the importance recruiters attach to employability skills and personal qualities. It was interesting to note that none of the employers I spoke to said that experience had to be gained in a specific industry to be relevant. This illustrates that all experience is of value and highly transferable. Qualifications evidence your academic and intellectual ability but your attitudes and behaviours (and moreover your ability to convincingly demonstrate them with experience) does appear to be the key to success in the recruitment and selection process. Skills gained through extra-curricular activities, volunteering and part-time work for example, will enhance your university experience, inform your career decisions and give you an advantage in the graduate labour market. UK Survey On Inappropriate Interview Questions

UK Survey On Inappropriate Interview Questions Female candidates  are three times as likely as male candidates to be asked inappropriate questions during interviews. Our latest study has revealed the shocking extent to which interviewers ask  awkward and sometimes illegal questions to candidates. The study of 2,810 individuals revealed that more than a quarter of female candidates had been asked about their marital status. Under UK  law, employers are not allowed to ask interview candidates about health, age, love life or family plans yet this data shows that a number of interviewers are unaware of this. Some of the questions discovered during the survey  included: “How likely are you to be wanting or planning to have a baby in the next year or so?” “You look really young! Are you sure you’re old enough to be applying for a job here?” “You’re quite a good looking girl, have you got yourself a boyfriend?” “Do you plan to be staying at this company for a long time?” The survey also revealed that men are more likely than women to be asked about their sexual preferences, another example of an area of questioning that should have  no place in an interview. An  infographic was created from the data  can be viewed  below:

How NOT to Set Your 2018 New Years Resolutions - Cubicle Chic

How NOT to Set Your 2018 New Year’s Resolutions - Cubicle Chic How NOT to Set Your 2018 New Year’s Resolutions Lifestyle December 16, 2017 9 CommentsThank you Jord Watch or sponsoring this post. I am wearing the Cassia Ebony watch in this post. It makes for a really unique Christmas gift this year. You can get a 25% off code here and purchase by 12/19 to make sure it arrives before Christmas!2017 is Almost Over…Can you believe 2017 is almost in our rear-view window? I know it’s Christmas and everything but where did the year go?! It doesn’t feel that long ago when I was preparing for the arrival of 2017 and thinking about what I wanted to accomplish. What were some of the things you wanted to achieve this year? What happened to your 2017 New Year’s Resolutions?Just maybe… You wanted to read more. You wanted to be healthier in food choices and exercise more. You wanted to manage time better. You wanted to call and talk to your loved ones more. You wanted to be recognized for your work.  You wanted to get that promotion, that car, that purse you were eyeing… you wanted to save more money. You wanted to pay off your debt. And the list goes on…Jord Watch Cassia Ebony WatchJord Watch Cassia Ebony WatchHere’s why I Failed to Meet My 2017 ResolutionsI know I failed to achieve most of my 2017 new year’s resolutions. And it wasn’t because I didn’t work hard enough or didn’t set the right goals. There are some things that are fundamentally flawed in the way most of us go about setting goals. So, to help channel the end-of-the-year enthusiasm and energy into setting the right goals, here are ways to NOT go about setting your 2018 resolutions:Treat your life as if it were a businessIn the business world, it’s all about the ROI and the end results and delivering results is always more important than using the right methods. But we are human, and if as human, our behaviors are fueled by our motivations. So, to maintain and sustain our motivations, methods are more important than the end goal. Stephen Guise of Mini Habits argues that by setting goals on very small and easy-to-do tasks, you are more likely to develop a habit. In the grand scheme of things, developing a good habit has more long term benefits than meeting a transient goal.Fixate on the goals that you’ve failed to accomplish year over yearI know I’ve been saying I want to lose 15 lbs since I was in my early 20’s. I’ve gotten close before, but I’ve never actually accomplished this goal. But year after year I find myself making the same resolution. And year after year, this goal just carries less and less important because I know exactly what happens when I don’t accomplish it: nothing.Set goals that depend on others’ action or behavioral changeThis approach is setting you up for failure because of 2 reasons. Number 1, you can influence people but you simply can’t change them unless they wanted to change. And secondly, if others’ actions are involved in meeting your goal, when things don’t work out, it’s too easy to shift the blame onto others and not fe el accountable.Set goals based on materialistic possessionIt may feel like a milestone to be able to afford and pay for something grand, like a car, or a watch, or a designer handbag. But the truth is, it’s easier than ever to finance things, and setting purchase as goals is basically creating temptations for yourself to fall into the trap of “putting it on the card”. Additionally, we all know how fast the thrill of buying something fades so meeting a goal like this isn’t going to be very satisfying.Have no plan on how to achieve the goals you’ve laid outThis is probably the quickest way to fail your goals. They do say goals without an action plan are just dreams. And we should certainly have the ability to dream, imagine the impossible, and picture accomplishing things beyond our immediate surrounding. But to achieve your goals you need tangible, trackable or measurable plans to make it happen.  Let’s not deny you the pleasure of making your dream come true and build s pecific plans to achieve your goals! Now that we got all that out of the way, what are some of the goals you are going to set for yourself to achieve, and how are you going to achieve them?A little bit about Jord Wood WatchesThis is my second Jord watch that I wear on a daily basis.
